The Dangers of Comparison & How to Overcome It

Have you ever found yourself ensnared in the all-consuming process of comparison?

It’s fun, isn’t it? It gives us ideas on what to do, how to live our lives, what things to strive for…

These things are all great until we realize we are on our own journey. Meaning, we aren’t living the same life as someone else. We have our own thoughts, ideas, and desires.

Maybe we’re thinking of something superficial, like desiring a designer handbag or a watch. If you really desire one, and not because someone else has one, that’s great. Go for it.

But each of us has a unique set of desires. Desires for our lives and our purpose. And we have our own reasoning behind them, too.

President Theodore Roosevelt once said that “comparison is the thief of joy,” and I agree with him.

The problem with comparison is that it distracts us from our true desires. And it robs us of joy, like Roosevelt said. When we set out to achieve things that we think we want because someone else has them, we’re robbing ourselves of our true desires. And when we fail to achieve our true desires because we’re distracted by other things, we’re robbing ourselves of the joy we would feel if we achieved that which we truly desire.

I know. This sounds a bit nutty. But it’s true. When we fail to honor ourselves by neglecting the things we truly desire, we’re still left feeling unfulfilled.

Comparison is useful in the negative sense, when we compare ourselves to people whose lives are more uncomfortable than ours. Then we start to complain less.

The problem with comparison, on the other hand, is when we lament all the things we want but don’t have. We must stop comparing ourselves to others and honor our own feelings and desires. Because it’s those things that will bring us joy. Not achieving someone else’s dream, but our own.

Another problem with comparison is when we get duration and effort involved. Maybe we see others succeeding effortlessly while we’re spinning our wheels. Maybe we see people who seem to have life figured out and we wonder why they’re so successful while we’re not. Or we bust our butts to achieve a dream and see someone else reaching the finish line like it was the easiest thing in the world to do.

This process of comparison is dangerous. Not to mention uninspiring and depressing.

We have to stop comparing our journey to someone else’s. And we have to focus on what we, ourselves, can do to work toward our dreams and desires. A huge part of this process is eliminating limiting beliefs and subconscious blockages so we can create a clear pathway to our dreams and desires.
