The Truth About Attainable Goals

Last week, I talked about setting goals and New Year’s resolutions and how to keep our energy levels high so that we can keep working toward the goals. So, today I wanted to talk about this concept of attainable goals.

It’s built into our minds that we need to set attainable goals. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but here’s a question for you: is “attainable” based on an old belief system?

If you already know that you probably won’t meet a goal or keep up with your resolutions because of past experiences, you’re unlikely to set a goal that is in line with what you can actually achieve. And by “actually achieve,” I mean something that you could accomplish if you weren’t holding yourself back. Put another way, if you weren’t so lazy.

There, I said it. (I’m picking on myself as well here, not just you.)

But the reality is that we can accomplish far more than we think we can, but since we don’t think we can, we don’t try. Or we give up too easily. We don’t set those big goals or go after those big dreams because it just won’t work out anyway so why bother?

I really want to banish this limiting belief for you.

Yes, a dream takes work to achieve. Yes, it may take some time. And it may not be easy. But the best things for us aren’t always the easiest. It’s a long or hard (or both) journey to success. And some people never reach it.

But I truly believe there’s an easier way.

You see, many people don’t actually believe they’ll ever achieve success, so they set small goals for themselves, or no goals at all. Like all of humanity, they have a dream life, a desire for themselves, and if life would ever go their way, they’d reach it.

But they sabotage themselves and all of their efforts by not really believing it will ever happen. They shoot themselves in the foot, so to speak. And so life doesn’t seem to go their way.

One of the big differences between those who are living their dream life and those who aren’t is that they have set an intention to achieve it and they believe in it. They also won’t take no for an answer. They’re going to reach their goal no matter what. Their belief system is such that they will achieve that dream.

If we are to succeed, we need to align ourselves with that way of thinking.

We can accomplish far more than we think we can. We can achieve far more than what is “realistic,” and we can reach big goals because we believe that they are attainable.

“Attainable” is relative. If we change how much we allow in the realm of “attainable,” we’ll achieve those previously unattainable big goals and dreams.
